Week 1 Project

Historical Conspiracy Theories Project

“This is the age of conspiracy."
                                           —Running Dog, Don DeLillo, 1978

In our first project, you and your partner will choose, analyze, and present a conspiracy theory from the last 75 years of modern history. You will enter into this project under two assumptions:
  1. Conspiracy theories are not pieces of non-fiction but are simply conjectures
  2. Although conspiracy theories often involve overly‐inflated explanations of the course of human events, they often express genuine underlying anxieties, prejudices, and fear within our society.
In your presentation you will need to address six topics:
  1. the official story as well as the conspiracy theory
  2. the evidence and logic used to argue for your theory
  3. the forces and events that give rise to your theory
  4. the identities of those who support your theory
  5. the methods used to promote and disseminate your conspiracy theory
  6. the uses of your theory

On Monday, December 8th, you will present your conspiracy theory to the group. You will have 30 minutes to teach the class all about your theory. You may use whatever medium you choose to present your theory: from powerpoint to film to a website. Make us believe!

Good Luck!

  1. Chemtrails are believed by some to be a mixture of chemicals or viruses, dumped into the air for population control and warfare. Most people who do believe use pictures showing trails and tanks as evidence. however, the trails can be caused by exhaust and the tanks are commonly used in testing. People believe these theories because they do not know how to explain their sightings or pictures. Many companies have researched the possibility of chemtrails, with some, like one in New Mexico, joking around as the announced that the trails did contain Dihydrogen Monoxide.
